HK = Hong Kong
PRC = People’s Republic of China
Several points concerning this post:
1. This photo is abominable. The people are raising a variant of the BRITISH flag, and Britain was the one who colonized China. How can China colonize itself?
2- “Right now, many of us are in a mass demonstration of pro-democracy against China. But wait a sec, isn’t Hong Kong China? This is a big misconception amongst foreigners, but please, we are far from being similar to China at all.”
There are…Chinese people…who know that Hong Kong is part of China…it’s not just a “foreigner” thing, and it most certainly is not a “misconception”.
3- “A little history class: Hong Kong used to be colonized by the British, and before you white-knights begin going all “them damn white racist ppl taking over another asian country” please don’t. We are thankful Britain took us under its wing and instilled in us values that I feel made us what we are today; that is, a democratic people with respect for free speech, amongst many things.”
China was forced to give up Hong Kong after it lost the First Opium War to Britain, the aggressor, colonizer and imperializer. I cannot comprehend how this user sides with the imperialists.
3(a)- “We are thankful Britain took us under its wing…”
I am truuuuuly thankful that ”…[Britain’s] Treaty of Nanjing opened [more like forced opened] five ports to international trade, fixed the tariff on imported goods at five percent, imposed an indemnity of twenty-one million ounces of silver on China to cover Britain’s war expenses, and ceded the island of Hong Kong to Great Britain” and how “…[s]eventeen thousand British and French troops occupied Beijing and set the Imperial Palace on fire. Another round of harsh treaties gave European merchants and missionaries greater privileges, and forced the Chinese to open several more cities to foreign trade” [x]
3(b)- “We are thankful Britain…instilled in us values that I feel made us what we are today”
Such as defending and liking imperialism!
3(c)- “…[we are]…a democratic people with respect for free speech, amongst many things”
I see free speech allows people to side with imperialists.
4- “On the other hand, China is communist, with government controlled media and news. Google, instagram, facebook and many tv shows are blocked in China. It really is just a few steps from North Korea imo”
I’m not going to debate communist theory here (in #4) because this isn’t exactly the place to do that.
As for the censorship, the user has a slight point.
The comparisons between China and North Korea, however, need to stop.
5 - “So what’s the problem here? Britain unfortunately had to hand back Hong Kong to China, but one of the requirements is that Hong Kong be allowed to operate as ‘one country two systems’, meaning Hong Kong should be able to have its own democratic government. But China has broken its promise”
wow where do I begin
5(a)- “Britain unfortunately had to hand back Hong Kong to China…”
PROBABLY BECAUSE HONG KONG WAS ORIGINALLY CHINA’S. PROBABLY BECAUSE BRITAIN STOLE THE PORT. What a joke.
5(b)- “…but one of the requirements is that Hong Kong be allowed to operate as ‘one country two systems’, meaning Hong Kong should be able to have its own democratic government. But China has broken its promise”
"One country two systems" was created by Deng Xiaoping aka Revisionist Bastard. Should give you an idea of how great his idea could possibly be.
5(c) “A while back, China tried to put a mandatory ‘national education’ curriculum in all our primary schools. We all know what that is; a communist brainwashing regime. And now, they have announced that in 2017 Hong Kong will be able to vote for its president; BUT only from 3 candidates hand picked by its PRO-BEIJING legislation”
Get this: Hong Kong is part of China. China should be under no obligation to follow an imperialist treaty telling it what to do with its own land.
6- “As you can see, China is trying to takeover completely and turn us into another communist state”
The only way I can really respond to this is the phrase “schade, schade” Is the overthrow of the bourgeoisie too scary for the people of Hong Kong? (vs x)
7- “But the police force who have always been a friend of the people…”
The bourgeois police have never been “a friend of the people”. Get over thinking that police are good people.
8- “[The police] are now responding with force, something that had never been done before in Hong Kong…” “First it was pepperspray, then teargas. Then, armed forces came in qith rubber bullets. They warn they will come out with live ammunition soon if we do not get off the streets…”
It is indeed wrong to respond to (peaceful?) protests with such force. However, it is also wrong to bear the flags of the imperializer, and claim that China is colonizing its own land. It is wrong to claim that Hong Kong is no longer China’s because HK was under British & Japanese rule.
9- “It’s been 2 days now, but the people plan to continue at least till 1st October or even beyond. The significance is that October 1st is China’s National day, not ours, Hong Kong has not been granted [its] own National day”
Hong Kong will never be granted until it becomes a sovereign nation, one entirely broken off of China. Until then, Hong Kong remains under Chinese jurisdiction.
1- Deng’s version of communism is revisionism, and he ruined China.
2- China is pseudosocialist lmao communism on the national scale in China is practically dead
